CONCACAF Champions League: Santos Laguna, Club América draw 0-0 in semis

Santos Laguna and Club América failed to get on the board in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League semifinal series on Wednesday night, when the two Liga MX clubs played to a scoreless draw in Torreon.

Both sides had numerous chances but were done in by some poor finishing, as the two goalkeepers were forced into just two saves each. The narrowest miss of the match came in the 41st minute, when América’s Michael fired a shot off the post.

Former Portland Timbers defender Jorge Villafaña played the full 90 minutes for Santos, who recorded their third-straight CCL shutout.

América will host the return leg at Estadio Azteca on April 5. The defending CCL champs will have to win at home to advance to their second straight final, while Santos will advance with a win or a draw by a score of 1-1 or higher. If regulation of the second leg ends scoreless, the match will proceed to extra time and, if necessary, penalty kicks.

The series winner will face off against the winner of the Queretaro-Tigres semifinal -- also knotted at 0-0 after the first leg -- in the final.
