Bonus Points: Which positions can boost your MLS Fantasy team value?

In MLS Fantasy, it’s wise to keep tabs on your team’s total value. The more money at your disposal, the more budget you have to work with to bring in high-value players, especially late in the season when some players will cost $13 million or more to transfer in.

Also, since transfer value is directly related to performance, players earning more value are also scoring more points.

One thing that we’ll be keeping an eye on throughout the season is how well the different positions are performing in terms of earning value. As the season goes on, consider focusing on loading up more starters in these positions, as it could help your long-term salary cap.

The biggest thing that stands out for me here is that more than 50 percent of forwards who have participated in the first two rounds have seen an overall price decrease. It’s a risk vs. reward position, since there have also been four players with a $0.2m or $0.3m increase (Joao Plata, Sebastian Giovinco, Cyle Larin, Dominic Oduro).

Defense and midfield, surprisingly enough, are roughly equal in terms of safety from losing value. Even more surprisingly, there have been more defenders with price increases than midfielders. It looks like the revamped defensive bonus points have been a boon for defenders so far.

Midfielders have done better at producing high numbers, though; Ignacio Piatti is the only player in MLS Fantasy that has risen $0.4m in value in two weeks.

Final Thoughts

Right now, defenders and midfielders -- and Giovinco, of course -- are the safest bet for maintaining a high team value. I strongly recommend sticking with playing five midfielders, as they’ll generally produce more points than defenders. If possible, pick ones that are heavily involved in set pieces, like Mauro Díaz and Diego Valeri, as they’ll get plenty of bonus points, even if they’re not scoring goals.

Best of luck in bringing in that sweet, sweet MLS Fantasy moolah!
