Boxing legend Oscar De La Hoya: Houston Dynamo can win MLS Cup

Owen Coyle - Oscar de la Hoya - Houston Dynamo - Laugh at training

Gold medalist boxer Oscar De La Hoya knows a little something about winning championships, and he thinks the Houston Dynamo have what it takes.

The Dynamo part-owner told ESPN FC that with new coach Owen Coach entering his second year at the helm, the team is poised to go all the way this season.

“With our head coach in place, now that the team has gotten a taste how he would them to play, I believe we’re going to compete,” De La Hoya said. “I believe we’re going to go very far. If not the championship, we’ll be in the final.”

The 10-time world titleholder in boxing also pinpointed Erick “Cubo” Torres as a player to watch this year.

“We have a strong team,” De La Hoya said. “We have Cubo, who is now looking sharp; he’s looking in shape, and I strongly believe the Houston Dynamo will have a shot at winning the championship this year.”

De La Hoya acquired a quarter stake of the Dynamo in 2008. They will face off against FC Dallas in first match-up of this year’s Texas Derby on Saturday (8:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE).
