Documentary chronicling New York City FC's first season to premiere at Tribeca Film Festival

David Villa celebrates a goal for NYCFC

New York City FC will be represented at the upcoming Tribeca Film Festival, which will host the world premiere of “Win!”, an all-access documentary about the birth and growth of NYCFC.

The film follows NYCFC from the moment the club was announced in 2013 through its inaugural 2015 MLS campaign, featuring sporting director Claudio Reyna, former head coach Jason Kreis, first-ever NYCFC player David Villa and the rest of the roster as the club was built.

“We are honored to be part of the Tribeca Film Festival, and excited to share the story of New York City FC,” Reyna said in a statement released by the club. “I have been incredibly proud to be part of this club and to have watched us grow and develop into what we have become, in our second season in Major League Soccer. We hope this will give our fans and anyone with an interest in our great game an insight into the unique challenges of building a club.”

Director Justin Webster and his independent film crew were given unfettered access for the film, shooting on location in New York City, Manchester, Orlando, Charleston, South Carolina and Jacksonville, Florida.

“’Win!’ is the story of a few people – including a former player-turned-executive, a star coach and a group of famous and not-so-famous soccer players – who take on a huge challenge: to build the first professional sports team in New York in over 20 years, hoping to stand alongside some of the most hallowed names in sports culture including the Yankees, Knicks and Giants,” Webster said in a statement released by the club.

“My challenge as a filmmaker was to tell this story from the inside, in the present tense. We filmed hundreds of hours, lived all the ups and downs through the eyes of the main characters – from the dressing room to the board room – and got to witness, finally, how the club and the people in it were transformed by the experience and how they connected with the city they represent.”

Win!” will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City on April 14. In addition to the first screening on April 14, the film will be shown on April 16, 18 and 23. Festival passes can be bought now on the festival’s website, while single-show tickets will go on sale on March 29.

NYCFC got their 2016 season off to a positive start under new head coach Patrick Vieira on Sunday, when they beat the Chicago Fire 4-3 at Toyota Park. They’ll open their home schedule this weekend, when they’ll host Toronto FC at Yankee Stadium on Sunday (5:00 pm ET, ESPN2 in the US, SportsNet 1 in Canada).
