Former MLB star Johnny Damon prefers soccer to baseball, follows Orlando City

Johnny Damon won two World Series, made untold millions and grew some very famous locks as a Major League Baseball player, but the retired All-Star doesn’t have much time for the game anymore.

He’s too busy following soccer.

Damon, who spent 18 years in the majors before retiring after the 2012 season, took in a Toronto FC training session in Orlando on Tuesday, with the Central Florida resident speaking with the Toronto Sun’s Kurt Larson about his love of the beautiful game.

“Just being able to stay focused and watch an entire baseball game [is difficult] as compared to a soccer game,” said the 42-year-old Damon, a leader on the 2004 Boston Red Sox World Series team and a member of the 2009 New York Yankees championship squad.

“Plus, there are maybe one or two soccer games a week. You can pay attention a lot more. I mean, baseball is tough [to watch] until playoff time for me. Ten teams make the playoffs and the season is 162 games.

“Soccer and American football is what I like to pay attention to.”

Damon follows Orlando City, too, and even quizzed Larson on the Lions’ Canadian international forward, 2015 MLS Rookie of the Year Cyle Larin
