The home leg of the US U-23 national team's all-important playoff to determine if they will qualify for the Rio Olympics this summer appears to be headed for Frisco, Texas.
San Jose had reportedly been in line to host the US leg of the last-chance, home-and-away series against Colombia in March. But on Wednesday FC Dallas president Dan Hunt tweeted out a general reference to hosting "a great event at Toyota Stadium," the club's home ground:
Minutes later, the Washington Post's Steve Goff reported that talks with San Jose have proved inconclusive and that FCD has apparently emerged as the frontrunner to host.
The USA's hopes to qualify for Rio come down to this series after a frustrating run in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament that saw the US win all three of their group-stage matches but fall to Honduras 2-0 in the semifinal, missing out on a guaranteed spot. Now they move onto a playoff vs. Colombia, who advanced after finishing in second place in the 2015 South American Youth Championship.
The last time the US men qualified for an Olympics was in 2008, when they posted a 1-1-1 record in Bejing and did not advance from group play.
