Report: Portland Timbers to sell defender Jorge Villafana to Santos Laguna

Portland Timbers' Jorge Villafana celebrates - MLS Cup 2015

Jorge Villafana has reportedly turned his stellar MLS Cup into a move to Mexico.

Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl reported on Tuesday that the Portland Timbers defender is set to move to Liga MX club Santos Laguna for a transfer fee of just under $1 million. Villafana, 26, had a breakout year for Portland, starting 39 matches in the regular season and playoffs and turning in a Man of the Match-worthy performance in Sunday’s MLS Cup win at Columbus.

Villafana, who began his career in 2007 with Chivas USA after winning the Sueño MLS competition, has 138 career appearances in MLS. He joined Portland ahead of the 2014 season.

Wahl also reported that agents for Mexican national team star Carlos Vela were in Columbus for MLS Cup last weekend, and that they met with representatives from MLS and the Colorado Rapids, who have the Real Sociedad forward's discovery rights.

Additionally, Wahl reported that FC Dallas has recieved transfer offers for star winger Fabian Castillo, but nothing greater than $5 million, which isn't enough for the club to part ways with the Colombian international.
