Vancouver Whitecaps ink center back Kendall Waston to multi-year extension

Kendall Waston in action for the Vancouver Whitecaps

The Vancouver Whitecaps' defensive anchor will be back for 2016 and beyond.

The Whitecaps announced on Thursday that they have re-signed center back Kendall Waston to a multi-year deal. The transaction comes a week after midfielder Matias Labaagreed to a similar extension with Vancouver.

“Kendall is an important building block in what we're trying to accomplish at this club,” said Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson in a statement. “His passion, physical presence, and ability to come up big in crucial situations have been instrumental to our success. He's a leader on the pitch and in the locker room, and we're excited to have arguably the best center back in the league during the prime of his career.”

The 27-year-old Costa Rican international started each of the 28 regular season games he appeared in for the Whitecaps this year, and contributed offensively with two goals. A finalist for the MLS Defender of the Year award this season, he helped the club finish in a tie for most clean sheets (13) and fewest goals allowed (36) in 2015.

“I'm very proud to be part of Whitecaps,” said Waston, who was voted as the 2015 Whitecaps Player of the Year by the fans. “I'm thankful to the city, club, and fans for embracing me and my family. I look forward to helping the team bring even more success to Vancouver.”
