The amazing story of how Seattle Sounders' Sigi Schmid once snuck into Estadio Azteca

Sigi Schmid upset with Lamar Neagle, Seattle Sounders

There are plenty of tales of coaches who have used creative means to get access to soccer games. Jose Mourinho's famous case of being smuggled into a locker room via laundry cart when he was suspended is one. Tigres UANL boss Ricardo Ferretti hiding behind the bench, badly, after being sent off is another.

The case of Seattle Sounders coach Sigi Schmid is a little different. As he explained to reporters on Wednesday, for his first trip to the vaunted Estadio Azteca, as a spectator in 1983, he encountered just one problem -- five people and just four tickets.

“So there were five of us and we had four tickets,” Schmid said. “We had a box, so you were allowed to park your car in the stadium. We couldn’t go into the stadium with five, so we drew straws and I got the short straw so I had to get into the trunk of the car and we drove in."

You can get the full story over at The Seattle Times. Suffice it to say, don't try this at home, kids. But at least we know Schmid has what it takes to get into the stadium, no matter what.
