Real Salt Lake and the Portland Timbers meet for the second time this season when the clubs face off in a critical Western Conference match Saturday evening at Rio Tinto Stadium. It's Real's first home game in more than a month, winning for a second time on their five-game road swing in their last MLS game, a 3-2 win at New York City FC, leaving them in third place in the division. The Timbers sit four points and four places further back, returning to MLS action off of a 1-0 win against the San Jose Earthquakes at Providence Park in their last league contest.

  • Real Salt Lake return home after completing a five-game road swing with a second consecutive victory, defeating New York City FC 3-2 on June 2 at Yankee Stadium. Yura Movsisyan and Juan Manuel Martinez each scored, earning their second goals in the last three matches.
  • The Timbers extended their undefeated run to three games with a second consecutive win at Providence Park in their last match, a 1-0 win against the San Jose Earthquakes on June 1.
  • The teams are meeting for the second time this season. Joao Plata and Yura Movsisyan staked RSL to a two-goal lead, but Fanendo Adi scored two goals five minutes apart late in the second half to leave the teams in a 2-2 draw March 19 at Providence Park.
  • The Timbers have won the last three meetings at Rio Tinto Stadium, their only wins ever in Utah. The only Portland home win vs. Real Salt Lake came in the first meeting ever, in 2011. The last five league meetings in Portland have all been draws, with three in a row all finishing goal-less before the first meeting this year.

LAST MEETING (MLS)
3/19: POR 2, RSL 2 (Adi 79, 84 - Plata 16; Movsisyan 58)

  • Real took the lead after 16 minutes when Joao Plata whipped home a master-class free kick that left goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey frozen to his line. But barely a quarter-hour later, RSL was down a man after Kyle Beckerman was sent off.
  • Yet it was Real who doubled the lead when Yura Movsisyan took advantage of a misplayed ball by Timbers defender Nat Borchers, streaked down the flank and scored his first goal since his return to MLS.
  • The Timbers finally broke through in the 79th minute when Fanendo Adi scored on a cleanup play in the penalty area, turning home a rebound.
  • Adi then collected the equalizer five minutes when he smashed home a penalty kick straight down the middle after Jamison Olave was sent off after committing the foul in the area.
