Jamaican national team looking to bring New York Red Bulls' top scorer Bradley Wright-Phillips into fold

Bradley Wright-Phillips celebrates with Red Bulls supporters

Could another English-born MLS star suit up for the Jamaican national team?

According to a report out of Jamaican publication The Gleaner on Saturday, that the national team has officially reached out to New York Red Bulls forward Bradley Wright-Phillips to gauge his interest in joining. According to the report, Wright-Phillips was mulling the offer.

Wright-Phillips – the 2014 MLS Golden Boot winner – was born and raised in England as the son and brother of former English internationals, but has never been called up for the English senior national team. That leaves him eligible for a one-time nationality switch after playing as an English U-20 international in the past, and is apparently eligible for Jamaica through his grandmother.

Should Wright-Phillips ultimately join the Reggae Boyz, he would join a long history of English-born Jamaican internationals, including recent addition and MLS compatriot Giles Barnes – who played in both the Copa America and Gold Cup this summer for the Jamaican national team. Jamaica posted their best-ever finish in the Gold Cup, reaching the final, where they lost to Mexico.

Earlier this year, Wright-Phillips was approached by another Caribbean nation, Grenada, and turned them down, citing the commitment to his club team.
