Save of the Week

Seattle Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei wins fourth MLS Save of the Week award of 2015 season

Stefan Frei moved into a three-way tie for the 2015 Save of the Week lead on Friday, notching his fourth Save of the Week win of the season for his big save on Real Salt Lake’s Sebastian Jaime.

Frei made his stop in the 11th minute, coming off his line to make himself big to block Jaime’s close-range effort from the left side of the box. The stop wasn’t enough to get Seattle a result, however, with the Sounders falling 2-0 at Rio Tinto Stadium last Saturday night.

Frei won the award by nearly eight percentage points, outpacing Colorado Rapids ‘keeper Clint Irwin, who took home 25.82 percent of the vote. Sporting Kansas City’s Tim Melia finished in third with 24.53 percent of the tally, while New York City FC’s Josh Saunders received 10.2 percent and Chicago Fire ‘keeper Sean Johnson took home 5.2 percent.

1. Stefan Frei (SEA) – 33.55%
2. Clint Irwin (COL) – 25.82%
3. Tim Melia (SKC) – 24.53%
4. Josh Saunders (NYC) – 10.2%
5. Sean Johnson (CHI) – 5.9%
