Toronto FC add to backline by signing veteran defender Josh Williams off waivers

Josh Williams claimed off waivers by Toronto FC

Toronto FC's defense left much to be desired in the month of July, and the club has made a move to help bolster its struggling backline.

TFC announced on Friday that they have signed veteran defender Josh Williams off waivers. Williams had been let go exactly a week earlier by expansion side New York City FC, who traded for the 27-year-old right back in December.

"Adding Josh gives us another starting caliber player on our roster,” Toronto FC general manager Tim Bezbatchenko said in a statement. “He brings five-plus years of MLS experience, including playoff experience.”

Injuries and a lack of consistency cost Williams his place in NYCFC's lineup. He started each of the five games he played in, but his last appearance came on May 10.

Toronto's defense could use all the help it can get right now. The club conceded 12 goals in four matches this month, going 1-2-1 in that span.
