Report: Costa Rican international Johan Venegas spotted at Montreal airport

Montreal Impact target Johan Venegas

MONTREAL – The Johan Venegas plot deepens.

Having already expressed his desire to play for the Montreal Impact, the 26-year-old Costa Rican international reportedly landed at Montreal-Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau airport late on Thursday night, where members of the Ultras Montréal supporters group greeted him.

On Friday morning, the Impact remained mum on the potential signing, despite reports that Alajuelense have indeed accepted an offer from the MLS club for Venegas. RDS’ Patrick Leduc also reported in the morning that Venegas would undergo a medical on Friday.

Head coach Frank Klopas addressed the Venegas situation in his pre-training media scrum, but didn't confirm anything.

“He’s here visiting the club,” Klopas said. “There’s nothing else I can say. We’ll see, you know? That’s about it.”

Klopas is a fan of the player, having scouted him as part of the Alajuelense side that Montreal knocked out of the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals. Venegas, a versatile midfielder and winger, also played for Costa Rica in the 2015 Gold Cup.

Should Venegas pass his medical, all that would remain for Montreal is finding a spot for Venegas on their packed roster. Venegas would be Montreal’s third signing of the summer after Kyle Bekker, acquired from FC Dallas for Bakary Soumare on July 16, and Designated Player Didier Drogba, who was introduced to the Montreal media and fans on Thursday night.
