Report: USMNT to face Brazil in friendly at New England's Gillette Stadium on September 8

The US men's national team could be set for a high-profile friendly showdown against five-time world champions Brazil, the Boston Globe reported on Friday.

Although there is no official word yet, the report indicates that a Sept. 8 match against the Seleçao at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. is expected to be confirmed soon. It would be the USMNT's second game in three months at Gillette, after the US defeated Haiti there, 1-0, on Friday evening in CONCACF Gold Cup group-stage play.

The game would be the USA's second in the September FIFA international window, with U.S. Soccer recently announcing a Sept. 4 friendly against Peru in Washington, D.C. The Brazilian Football Confederation has so far noted that the national team will be playing twice in the United States in September, against Argentina and an unspecified opponent.

The USMNT has struggled mightily against the South American powerhouse, posting a 1-16-0 record with the lone win coming in 1998 Gold Cup. The two teams last met on May 30, 2012, a 4-1 friendly win for Brazil at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. The team has usually enjoyed success in Foxborough, with a combined 17-2-5 record at Foxboro and Gillette Stadiums after Friday's win vs. Haiti.

Although they are currently ranked No. 6 in the FIFA World Rankings, Brazil have struggled recently relative to expectations. They were famously eliminated from the 2014 World Cup at the semifinal stage after a 7-1 thrashing by Germany on home soil, and also went out to Paraguay on penalty kicks in the semifinals of the recently-held 2015 Copa América.
