New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio "exploring logistics" for USWNT ticker-tape parade

The US women’s national team are already heroes to millions across the country – now they might be getting a parade worthy of their exalted status.

New York City is considering holding a ticker-tape parade for the recently-crowned World Cup champs, with Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office “exploring logistics and talking with the team” about honoring the USWNT after their 5-2 win over Japan in Sunday’s World Cup final.

“The Mayor’s Office congratulates the US Women’s World Cup championship team on its tremendous achievement, and is currently exploring logisitics and talking with the team and other partners about a possible ticker-tape parade,” spokeswoman Karen Hinton said in a statement.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer is clearly on board with the idea, urging de Blasio in a letter on Monday to hold a parade for the USWNT in the Canyon of Heroes, which runs along Broadway from Battery Park to City Hall. New York last held a ticker-tape parade in 2012, when the NFL’s New York Giants beat the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl.

“New York City has a strong history of honoring sporting achievements in the Canyon of Heroes, but it has never held a parade to honor a women’s team,” Brewer wrote in her letter to de Blasio. “Our newest soccer champions represent an opportunity for New York to recognize that heroes and role models come in all genders, and I hope you will work with me to make this parade a reality.”
