Report: USMNT to play Copa America semifinalist Peru at RFK Stadium on Sept. 4

Jurgen Klinsmann, two thumbs up

The US national team might be getting ready for the start of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, but they are also planning ahead for what is to come in the fall.

According to a report from the Washington Post, the US will host Copa America semifinalist Peru in a friendly at RFK Stadium on Sept. 4. The match falls during a FIFA international window, which means that both US coach Jurgen Klinsmann and Peru manager Ricardo Gareca will be able to call in their best players.

US Soccer was also reportedly in discussions with Uruguay and Ghana over potentially playing on that date, but Peru wound up being the choice. An official announcement for the friendly, which is the first of two available September fixtures, is expected some time this week.

Klinsmann and the Americans are currently gearing up for the start of their Gold Cup title defense. The US play their final Gold Cup tune-up on Friday against Guatemala before starting group play against Honduras, Haiti, and Panama.

Peru, meanwhile, are currently trying to reach the Copa America final. The Peruvians – who boast talents like Claudio Pizarro (Bayern Munich), Jefferson Farfan (Schalke) and Juan Vargas (Fiorentina) – take on tournament host Chile in the semifinals on Monday night.
