One of the US men's national team's best forwards has one eye on a move to MLS, as Aron Johannsson told the "ESPN Soccer Today" radio program on Sunday that he'd like to play in the league "at the peak of my career."
Johannsson, 24, currently plays his club soccer at AZ in the Dutch Eredivisie, where he has scored 29 goals in 58 league appearances since joining the club in January 2013. He recently helped the club to their sixth consecutive qualification for European competition.
"Most definitely," Johannsson said when asked if he sees himself making an eventual move to MLS. "I've said it a lot of times. I hope just the opportunity comes. I want to, when I'm at the peak of my career, then I want to be playing in the MLS, because I don't want to go there when I'm getting too old and the expectations are too much and I can't handle it.
"So when I'm playing at my best level, I want to be able to play in the US and show people how good I am over there."
The Alabama-born striker, who grew up in Iceland, made his debut for the US national team in August 2013 after switching his international allegiance from the island nation. He currently has 12 caps for the US, including a 68-minute substitute appearance in the USA's 2-1 win over Ghana in the 2014 World Cup.
He is also a part of head coach Jurgen Klinsmann's 23-man squad for the upcoming CONCACAF Gold Cup, which kicks off on July 7 against Honduras.
