USL: LA Galaxy II continue surge in Western race, setting up showdown with Seattle Sounders 2

LA Galaxy II attacker Raul Mendiola

The LA Galaxy II continued their surge in the Western Conference with a 2-1 win Saturday night over Southern California rivals Orange County Blues FC at Anteater Stadium in Irvine, California, LA’s sixth win in their last seven matches (GALAXY RECAP | GAME REPLAY).

Goals on either end of halftime from Raul Mendiola (above), on loan from the Galaxy’s first team, and Kainoa Bailey were enough for the victory, with Orange County’s goal coming from Chris Cortez. Jack McBean, the only other Los Dos player on loan from the big club, went the full 90 minutes and recorded the assist on Mendiola’s goal.

Galaxy II now trail first-place Seattle Sounders 2 by just one point going into Thursday night’s showdown between the two clubs.

There were two games in last week’s action between clubs operated by MLS sides.

To kick off the week, Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 and Real Monarchs SLC played to a thrilling 2-2 draw Wednesday at Rio Tinto Stadium (VANCOUVER RECAP | REAL MONARCHS RECAP | HIGHLIGHTS). Real Salt Lake’s 2015 SuperDraft pick Lucas Baldin scored in stoppage time to give his team the late draw. The Monarchs got their first goal from Max Rauhofer, his fifth of the season, and six saves from on-loan goalkeeper Lalo Fernandez. Vancouver got goals from on-loan forward Caleb Clarke for a 1-0 lead, and then Andre Lewis for a 2-1 second-half lead.

In the other match between two MLS-affiliated teams, Victor Ndiaye scored a 90th-minute goal to give FC Montreal a 2-2 draw with New York Red Bulls II on Saturday at Montreal’s Stade Saputo (NEW YORK RECAP | MONTREAL RECAP | GAME REPLAY).

Goals from Manolo Sanchez and Leo Stolz, both on loan from New York Red Bulls’ first team, had Red Bulls II ahead late. Montreal’s first goal came from Alessandro Riggi.

Toronto FC II goalkeeper Quillan Roberts’ 10 saves highlighted their scoreless draw Saturday with the Harrisburg City Islanders (TORONTO RECAP).

The Western Conference-leading Sounders 2 were sent to a stunning, 5-1 loss at the hands of the Tulsa Roughnecks on Saturday at Starfire Stadium, their first home loss of the season despite the use of four on-loan players (SEATTLE RECAP). Sounders 2’s lone goal came from Lucas Cordeiro. Adam Black recorded a brace, and Pablo Rossi, Kidd Nwabueze and Sammy Ochoa all scored for the Roughnecks.
