United States U-23 national team finish second in Toulon Tournament group, will play in third-place game

They didn't even take the field on Thursday, but after two days of waiting, the United States Under-23 national team are officially in the third-place game of the 2015 Toulon Tournament.

The U-23s wrapped up their group-stage campaign on Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Qatar to give them six points from their four games, but had to wait until the final round of Group A games to be assured of their position, which was no sure thing.

Going into Thursday's games, the US stood level on points with the Netherlands, who possessd a plus-three goal differential compared to the Yanks' even mark. That meant only a heavy Dutch defeat to France would send head coach Andi Herzog's team through, and Les Bleus duly obliged with a 4-0 win. The US also avoided being overtaken by Costa Rica, who could've also hit the six-point mark but instead only managed to draw 1-1 with Qatar.

The U-23s, who feature six MLS-based players as well as 2014 World Cup goalscorer Julian Green (pictured above), will find out after tomorrow's Group B finales whether they will face England, Morocco, or Mexico in the third-place game on Sunday (12 pm ET, beIN Sport).
