Canadian Exports: Atiba Hutchinson signs new two-year deal with Besiktas

Atiba Hutchinson

Atiba Hutchinson isn’t going anywhere.

Besiktas announced on Thursday that they’ve signed the 32-year-old Canadian midfielder to a new two-year contract. The native of Brampton, Ontario has played a vital role for the Turkish club over the past two seasons, in both league play and in European competition.

He took the team to the precipice of the UEFA Champions League this season, though they fell just short in a playoff against Arsenal. But Hutchinson got some notice for his performances—including from Gunners manager Arsene Wenger—leading to some speculation that he could be moving on this summer.

He’ll return to a Besiktas side that is hungry to win their first domestic league title since 2009. Hutchinson joined Besiktas in 2013 following three seasons with PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands.

Hutchinson has 68 caps for Canada and is part of the team’s roster in World Cup qualifying later this month.
