United States 1, Qatar 0 | Toulon Tournament Match Recap

Julian Green at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil

A well-taken strike by Julian Green paced the US Under-23 national team to a 1-0 win over Qatar in their final group game at the 2015 Toulon Tournament on Tuesday, but the young Yanks must wait and hope that other results break in their favor if they are to reach the event’s third-place playoff match.

Green finished Alonso Hernandez’s cross from the right wing to give the US an early lead they would not relinquish, despite an improved second-half display from the 2022 World Cup host nation.

Also starting for coach Andy Herzog’s side: Real Salt Lake’s Boyd Okwuonu, New York Red Bulls II’s Dan Metzger, Tyler Miller, Will Packwood, Sam Strong, Juan Pablo Ocegueda, Benji Joya, Marc Pelosi and Alfred Koroma Shams.

With two wins and two losses, the US sit third in their five-team group, tied with leaders France and second-place Netherlands on six points. But they trail the two European teams on goal differential, meaning that they must hope for beneficial results in the France vs. Costa Rica match later on Tuesday and the France-Netherlands match on Thursday.
