AMSTERDAM – Borussia Dortmund are working on a one-year contract extension for winger Joseph Gyau, even though the US international's return from left knee troubles has been pushed back “several months” by the club.
A reporter from local daily Ruhr Nachtrichten posted on Twitter last week that the 22-year-old Tampa native would miss the entire 2015-16 season due to cartilage problems and that his new deal was finished, neither of which was entirely accurate. Gyau's agent confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that negotiations over a prolonged deal are still ongoing, while Dortmund has shot down the notion that Gyau has been ruled out for the upcoming season.

"Concerning his knee, it is true that the surgery will cause a long break of several months," BvB press liaison Priska Schulz told MLSsoccer.com on Monday.
Originally slated for a full training return during the preseason, the Europa League entrants are now expecting the winger to return closer to winter. Nevertheless, Dortmund are eager to extend Gyau's stay with the club.
"Dortmund is happy with Joe, and Joe is happy at Dortmund," Gyau rep Christian Rapp told MLSsoccer.com. "The most important thing right now is him getting fit again."
Mere weeks after making his Bundesliga debut for the club last September, Gyau suffered the original torn meniscus injury in a US national-team friendly against Ecuador. Gyau also netted twice in 10 reserve contests in the 3.Liga last season.
