American Exports: US national team defender Geoff Cameron extends his stay at Stoke City

Geoff Cameron, Stoke City (January 1, 2015)

AMSTERDAM – Stoke City stalwart Geoff Cameron has been rewarded with an improved deal that will keep him at the Brittania until the summer of 2018.

The Massacushetts native would have entered the final year of his deal in June, but the Potters moved to extend his stay for an additional two seasons. Cameron signed the new deal on the same day he helped Stoke end the EPL season with a 6-1 humbling of guests Liverpool.

"It was a long negotiating process, but I'm proud to play for Stoke City," Cameron told reporters in post-match comments that tipped higher ambitions for the season to come. "Next year we're looking to push on for Europa League and further. We're proving every year that we get better and better."

The closing day rout of Liverpool marked Cameron's 99th league appearance for Stoke. The 29-year-old has worked 110 contests across all competitions for the club since arriving from the Houston Dynamo in the summer of 2012.

This season, injuries limited Cameron to 21 starts in 27 appearances. He completed 75 percent of his passes while notching 100 clearances, 56 pass picks and 54 tackles at the defensive end.

Partly due to injury, Cameron has only appeared in one of the USMNT's 10 matches since their last match at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, playing 90 minutes in a 4-1 loss to the Republic of Ireland.
