A new host of MLS-operated USL teams will get their first crack at the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup next week, and after Wednesday night's First Round, they now know who, when, and where they will be playing (see US Soccer official schedule unveiling) when the Second Round gets underway on May 20.
Both Portland Timbers 2 and Real Monarchs SLC face cross-country road trips for their inaugural games in the nation's longest-running soccer tournament. Timbers 2 will head to Pontiac, Michigan to face the Michigan Bucks of the USL Premier Development League (PDL), and the RSL second team heads to New York to face another PDL team, the Long Island Rough Riders.
New York Red Bulls II also face a road game, but it's only a hop, skip, and a jump for them as they make the short trip to Newark, New Jersey to face the PDL's Jersey Express. LA Galaxy II and Seattle Sounders 2 (pictured above) both welcome local opposition from the PDL, the Ventura County Fusion and Kitsap Pumas, respectively.
In other notable matchups, the Philadephia Union's PDL and USL affiliates will face off when Reading United A.C. host the Harrisburg City Islanders, while USL expansion side Colorado Springs Switchbacks host the Cinderella story of the tournament so far – Boulder, Colorado-based Harpo's FC of the US Specialty Sports Association, still alive after playing in the Preliminary Round.
The winners of the 21 Second Round matches will move on to the Third Round, set for May 27, where nine US-based NASL sides will enter the tournament. Seventeen MLS teams will begin play in the Fourth Round on June 16-17.
