Jonathan Spector with Birmingham City

AMSTERDAM – Birmingham City defender Jonathan Spector has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the club, MLSsoccer.com has learned.

The 29-year-old was set to run out of contract in June and had interest from multiple MLS teams, but chose to remain with the St. Andrews side. Most often used as a right back or central midfielder during his Birmingham tenure, sources have informed MLSsoccer.com that Spector will move forward as a member of manager Gary Rowett's central defense stable.

Spector worked 24 Championship contests during the recently completed season, with his last 15 starts coming as a center back. The US international shined in the heart of defense, helping the Brums post seven of their 12 shutouts this season. For the season, the Illinois native led the club by averaging over nine defensive stops per game, racking up 121 clearances, 74 pass picks, 28 tackles and 21 blocks.
