MLS primary transfer window closes on Tuesday night; secondary window to open July 8

Portland Timbers' Fanendo Adi looks anguished against Orlando City SC

If any MLS clubs plan to bring in new transfer acquisitions from clubs abroad, they’ve got a matter of hours left to complete the deal before it's pushed off to midsummer.

Major League Soccer’s primary transfer window is set to close at 11:59 pm ET on Tuesday night, meaning that any incoming transfers of a player under contract with a club overseas must be completed by that time in order to join their new MLS club before the secondary window opens on July 8.

League regulations state that “the registration windows – the dates between which MLS may request the transfer certificate of a player under contract in another country – are as follows: Primary Window - February 18 – May 12 … Secondary Window - July 8 – August 6.”

Recent such transactions include the Colorado Rapids’ acquisition of Argentine forward Luis Solignac via a transfer from Nueva Chicago on May 1, and the LA Galaxy’s acquisition of former US youth international Sebastian Lletget on a free transfer from England’s West Ham United on May 8.

Last season the Portland Timbers brought in Nigerian striker Fanendo Adi (pictured above) on a Designated Player deal just before the close of the primary transfer window.
