Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins wins MLS Player of the Week after productive game vs. NYCFC

Seattle Sounders forward Obafemi Martins has been voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 9 of the 2015 MLS season.

Martins tallied two goals and assisted on a third in the Sounders' 3-1 win over New York City FC on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.

The Nigerian got the scoring started in the match, as he ran onto the end of Marco Pappa's nifty throughball and hit a shot past goalkeeper Josh Saunders in the 23rd minute to score his 30th career goal for Seattle. Then, just before the hour mark, he set up Clint Dempsey's go-ahead goal with some tricky moves on the left flank to set up a cross into the box, before capping off his night with the insurance tally, blasting through NYCFC's defense to finish off an 18-pass sequence by the Sounders.

Martins and the Sounders are back in action on Saturday, when they face Columbus Crew SC at MAPFRE Stadium (7:30 pm ET, MLS LIVE).

The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
