DC United reach multi-year contract extension with reigning MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Bill Hamid

Bill Hamid will be staying where it all started for just a bit longer.

D.C. United announced Friday they have agreed to a multi-year contract extension with the Homegrown goalkeeper and defending MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Following his fifth season with the club after becoming the first United Academy player to sign a Homegrown contract in 2009, Hamid landed in the crosshairs of a number of European clubs over the offseason.

“We are thrilled to secure Bill’s services and that he will continue to be a part of his hometown club,” D.C. United general manager and vice president of soccer operations Dave Kasper said in a statement. “D.C. United’s first Homegrown player has developed into an outstanding goalkeeper and we believe his best years are still ahead of him.”

Hamid, 24, finished the 2014 season first in the league in saves percentage (75.3), second in shutouts (10), third in goals against average (1.13), tied for fourth in wins (14) and fourth in saves (110). He was the only goalkeeper to finish the MLS regular season in the top three in saves percentage, shutouts and goals against average. He set career highs in games played and started (30), minutes played (2,700) shutouts, saves and wins.

Hamid, who has made two appearances with the US national team, was also the first Homegrown player to be named Goalkeeper of the year and to reach 100 regular-season games, as well as the first Homegrown ‘keeper selected to the MLS Best XI and All-Star Team.

Hamid made history on May 5, 2010, becoming the youngest goalkeeper to win an MLS contest at 19 years and 161 days old. So far in 2015, Hamid is 3-1-1 with 22 saves and three shutouts in five appearances (five starts).
