Bonus Points: MLS Fantasy positional breakdown – have the tides turned for attackers?

Ethan Finlay celebrates for Fantasy

This week, we’re going to take a step back and look at how each position has done over the first eight rounds of the season. Which part of the field has given MLS Fantasy owners the most production?

First, let’s take a look at the average scores for each position for players that played at least 45 minutes in a match:

During the first six rounds, goalkeepers and defenders outperformed midfielders and forwards, posting averages in the 4.5 to 5.8 range.

In the last couple weeks, however, midfielders and forwards have started finding the back of the net. Week 8 was the first week this season where both goalkeepers and defenders scored below 4.0 points on average.

While defensive players have been steady choices on the whole, midfielders and forwards have led the pack in highest single-player score for three straight rounds:

We’ve only had one round where a goalkeeper has scored double-digit points, whereas the midfielders and forwards have each only had one round where no one scored at least 10 points. In other words, there’s a higher ceiling on the attackers – a higher likelihood that one of your midfielders or forwards will have a one-round explosion that puts you ahead of the pack.

Here’s a better way to show this – the number of players in each position that scored at least 10 points in a match for each round:

Defenders have steadily declined; midfielders and forwards are shooting up the chart. Who do you think will be the next 10+ point earner this week? Let me know, and good luck with your transfers!
