American Exports: Fabian Johnson & Borussia Moenchengladbach fall on PKs in DfB-Pokal quarters

Fabian Johnson

AMSTERDAM – Borussia Mönchengladbach sub Fabian Johnson buried his spot kick in the shootout, but the visitors would end up bounced from the DfB-Pokal quarterfinals after falling 5-4 on penalties at Arminia Bielefeld.

The US international entered the contest to play left wing nine minutes into the first overtime session. Johnson completed six of nine passes and had a shot blocked after wiggling into the area three minutes before spot kicks.

After Raffael failed on the Foals' first penalty try, Johnson stepped up to get them on the shootout scoreboard. Bielefeld netminder Alexander Schwolow guessed the correct direction, but could not reach the American's shot due to its perfect corner placement.

The loss was 'Gladbach's first of any kind since their Europa League ouster on February 26.

Over in Sweden's Allsenskan, Heath Pearce went unused as IFK Göteborg scored a 2-0 victory at Örebro to stand one goal in differential off the top spot through two rounds.
