Champions League: Herediano, America fined, Paolo Goltz suspended for incidents in semifinal first leg

Herediano vs. Club America (March 17, 2015)

The CONCACAF Disciplinary Committee on Wednesday levied fines on 2014-15 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League semifinalists CS Herediano and Club America and suspended and fined America player Paolo Goltz for incidents in the first leg of the clubs’ semifinal series back on March 17 in Costa Rica.

The two clubs meet April 8 in the decisive second leg, with Herediano carrying a 3-0 advantage from the first meeting. The winner faces the team that emerges from the other semifinal between MLS side Montreal Impact and Alajuelense.

Herediano were fined for endangering player and fan safety by prematurely shutting off stadium lights and failing to provide adequate security and accountability for poor supporter conduct surrounding an incident in which projectiles caused substantial damage to the Club America team bus post-match.

Goltz was suspended six matches, applicable to any future participation in the CCL, and also fined an undisclosed amount for kicking Herediano’s Cristhian Lagos as he lay on the turf. The suspension does not apply to FIFA events and would not carry over to the 2015 FIFA Club World Cup if America qualifies by winning the CCL.

America were fined for players’ misconduct in damaging installations at the Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero after the conclusion of the match and for a post-match breach of the tournament’s media regulations.
