Toronto FC sign defender Clément Simonin, ninth overall pick in 2015 SuperDraft, from USL team

Toronto FC draft pick Clement Simonin signs

Toronto FC announced Friday that the club has signed rookie defender Clément Simonin. As per club and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Clément is a defender that we are all very high on. He performed well throughout the preseason and was a player that we scouted before drafting him earlier this year,” said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a statement. “We had plans to add him to the senior roster, and this decision has been accelerated given that we currently have a couple defenders carrying knocks. Clément will certainly improve our depth and give the coaches additional options.”

Simonin, 23, signed with Toronto FC II on March 12. He played the full 90 minutes and registered an assist in TFC II’s inaugural match last weekend in Charleston, where the Reds fell 3-2. Simonin was originally selected in the first round, ninth overall by Toronto FC in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.
