American Exports: Tim Howard, Everton thumped by Dynamo Kyiv, eliminated from Europa League

Tim Howard grimaces

AMSTERDAM – Tim Howard and Everton were unceremoniously dumped out of the Europa League after suffering a 5-2 (6-4 aggregate) defeat away to Round of 16 second leg hosts Dynamo Kyiv.

Having won the home leg 2-1 last week, the Toffees netminder notched three saves an two cross captures on a night when his defense routinely fell to pieces.

His best stop came shortly after Andriy Yarmolenko's stunning opener gave Dynamo an away goal-based aggregate lead in the 21st minute. Howard got scandalous revenge the second time, sprawling to paw away a 16-yard Yarmolenko drive after the Ukraine star had undressed a pair of Everton defenders to breach the area.

Romelu Lukaku would fire home a highlight reel strike of his own on 29 minutes to restore Everton's lead in the tie, but it was short-lived. The away defense abandoned Howard as Lukasz Teodorczyk leveled the score 3-3 aggregate six minutes later and Miguel Veloso's unstoppable 20-yard cracker two minutes later put Kyiv ahead to stay.

Everton would fall further behind in the second half, before Phil Jagielka's 82nd minute goal gave them a momentary ray of hope. The Toffees' exit means there will be no English club in the elite eight of either UEFA cup tournament for the first time in 22 years.
