American Exports: Olympic hopeful Will Packwood loaned to Cheltenham Town in League Two

AMSTERDAM – Birmingham City defender Will Packwood has joined League Two survivalists Cheltenham Town on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old is expected to go directly into the selection when the Robins visit nearby rivals Newport County on Friday night. The Brums do, however, hold the right to an instant recall to St. Andrews.

"There will be some rotation and Will fits nicely into that," Cheltenham boss Russell Milton told the club website. "I have had some very good reports about him, and I've seen him play a few times myself. He is a quick, strong boy, who talks a lot for someone so young."

This will be Packwood's second loan stint of the term, following an ill-fated short stay with League One side Colchester in November. The American was both sent off and injured on the same play in his sole appearance before being sent back to Birmingham for recovery.

Now finally back to fitness from that groin setback, the 6-foot-3 Packwood will try to help Cheltenham move away from the danger zone. With 11 games remaining on the schedule, the Gloucestershire side stand just one point above the trap door with an inferior goal differential to nearest chasers Tranmere.
