Will either MLS club advance in CCL play?

Countdown To Friday

It is the most wonderful time of the year… preview time! Andrew, Simon, and David weigh in on some of the biggest storylines of the upcoming MLS season. Who goes D.C. United this year with a worst-to-first season? Can Sporting KC and Houston make the playoffs in their first year in the West? Which expansion team finishes higher? Plus, who is our must-see MLS Live team of 2015?

In the second segment, the star of the hour is Carlos Bocanegra, who checks in to discuss his new position as technical director at MLS Atlanta 2017. But first the guys lament D.C. United’s CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal loss and preview the Montreal and D.C. second legs. Then Bocanegra joins to talk about his plans and goals for Atlanta’s youth academy, training center, scouting network and more. Plus, Andrew gives you the lowdown from the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference this weekend.

In the mailbag, the guys consider fan’s requests for a Simon Borg personalized voicemail as an ETR fantasy league prize (click here to join the league). Listeners also voice their opinion on additional substitutions. Could we see designated free-kick specialists in the future? You won’t want to miss one fan’s theory about the “poop” conversation in the Borg household.

ExtraTime Radio Book Club:

The guys revive the ETR Book Club by reviewing The Numbers Game: Why Everything You Know About Soccer Is Wrong by Chris Anderson and David Sally.

Sally joins to talk about the thought process behind the book, the progress in the field since and where advanced statistics in soccer go from here. Meanwhile, Opta analyst Devin Pleuler and the Armchair Analyst Matt Doyle fill in for Simon for a roundtable on the state of stats in soccer.

While you're at it, listen to the episode that got it started. Eight World Cup by George Vecsey. Then follow along with James Montague as he takes you on a awe-inspiring journey to the 2014 World Cup in "Thirty-One Nil." Only this time it's with the minnows that will never actually make it there.
