American Exports: Tim Howard is last American standing in Europe after leading Everton to Europa win

Tim Howard, Everton

AMSTERDAM – Tim Howard stands as the last American alive in the 2014-15 European campaign after backstopping Everton into the Europa League sweet 16 with a 3-1 (7-2 aggregate) victory over second-leg visitors Young Boys Bern on Thursday night.

Howard required just one save and a pair of cross captures to complete the job as the Toffees matched their deepest continental cup run since reaching the same round of the 2008 UEFA Cup.

His lone save actually resulted in the game's 13th-minute opener. Howard made a fantastic reaction stop on Raphael Nuzzolo's point-blank redirection header, only to watch helplessly as Sékou Sanogo quickly pounced for the rebound.

Howard & Co. will learn their next opponent during a draw for the Round of 16 Friday, and the ties will begin on March 12.

Elsewhere, Fabian Johnson worked the final 13 minutes as Borussia Mönchengladbach bowed out with a 3-2 (4-2 aggregate) loss against visiting Sevilla. The Foals kept it close until Vitolo sealed the match and the tie with a 79th-minute strike.
