American Exports: Rough day at the office for Tim Howard as Everton labor to home draw vs. Leicester

Tim Howard flies through the air in a game for Everton

AMSTERDAM – Everton's Tim Howard was punished for a pair of goalkeeping errors on Sunday, but the home side rallied for a 2-2 draw thanks to a Leicester City own goal near full time.

The American made two saves on the day, but did not have his usual air of command around the six-yard box. After getting away with offering up a tasty rebound in the first half, Howard felt the pain after doing the same for David Nugent in the 63rd minute.

Instead of smothering a low cross from the right flank, Howard could only push it off a teammate's leg onto the plate of a willing Nugent as the Foxes quickly answered Everton's opener. Seven minutes later, the Toffees netminder partially whiffed on a poorly-balanced punch, falling far enough out of position to allow Esteban Cambiasso to fire Leicester into the lead.

However, Matthew Upson's 89th-minute own goal would eventually rescue Everton from defeat. Still winless in three, the hosts stayed put in 12th place.

Turning focus to the Bundesliga, John Anthony Brooks was a busy man as Hertha Berlin fell 2-1 away to streaking Wolfsburg.

The visitors were backed up into their own end for much of the contest, but kept the score tied until red-hot Wolves striker Bas Dost bagged his second of the game with 16 minutes to play. Brooks, who was among the culpable on Wolfsburg's first-half opener, finished with a game-high eight clearances and 13 long passes completed in or into the attacking half.

With five losses in the last six games, the capital crew remained next-to-bottom in the table.

Also, Fabian Johnson went unused as Borussia Mönchengladbach were edged out at the death in Hamburg. The Foals held firm in third place, two points up in the race for Germany's last express pass to the Champions League group phase.
