US Soccer: No pre-Gold Cup friendly with Australia is scheduled

Jermaine Jones celebrates his USMNT goal against Portugal

An Australian media report has renewed speculation this week that the US national team will meet the Socceroos in a friendly during the USMNT's preparations for the Gold Cup in July.

FourFourTwo's Australia edition reported on Monday that the USMNT could host their Southern Hemisphere counterparts on July 3, citing a schedule graphic shown by Fox Sports on Sunday. But the information is inaccurate, according to US Soccer Federation officials.

“We do not have a match scheduled against Australia in July,” a federation spokesperson told MLSsoccer.com.

July 3 is a Friday, and any match on that date would present a relatively short turnaround for the USMNT's Gold Cup opener, set for Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas (home of FC Dallas) on July 7.

Jurgen Klinsmann's side also have group-stage matches scheduled at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on July 10 and Sporting Park in Kansas City on July 13.

The USMNT are the defending Gold Cup champions, while Australia recently won their first-ever AFC Asian Cup championship. The USA's summer schedule presently includes European friendlies at the Netherlands on June 5 and at Germany on June 10.
