American Exports: Tim Howard pours cold water on reports linking him with move back to MLS

Tim Howard

It doesn’t look like Tim Howard is headed to MLS anytime soon.

The US national team goalkeeper addressed rumors that he’s eyeing a move to the league on Tuesday, with the 35-year-old backstop telling SiriusXM FC that he’s planning on ending his career at longtime club Everton.

“There seems to be a lot being said about my return,” Howard told the satellite radio program on Tuesday. “Two weeks ago some things popped up on Twitter and I had to call my agent to find out what was going on because I didn’t know anything about it and neither did he.”

“I’ve still got several seasons left on my contract with Everton and at the end of that I want to be done playing.

“What happens between then? I’ve got no idea. It is a business but I’m happy where I am and don’t know anything about those rumors.”

Recent comments made by Everton manager Roberto Martinez indicating that he’s looking to bring in long-term competition for Howard fueled speculation that the American netminder might consider a return to MLS, where he began his career with the New York/New Jersey Metrostars.

However, Martinez appeared to brush off the notion that he’s looking to replace Howard in an interview two weeks ago with ESPN FC.

“He’s in the best moment of his career,” Martinez said. “When you’re a goalkeeper of that age, you’re starting to use your experience to influence the people around you.

“I think his goalkeeping has been terrific. His contract finishes after the next World Cup, and I don’t think anything before that is going to tempt him to leave Everton. I don’t think that’s the case at all.”
