American Exports: Jonathan Spector goes distance in England, Julian Green scores for Hamburg Under-23s

Jonathan Spector with Birmingham City

AMSTERDAM – Jonathan Spector and Birmingham City were pegged back late by 10-man Championship leaders Middlesbrough in a 1-1 home draw on Wednesday night.

Working his fourth successive game in central defense, the American almost opened the scoring when his six-yard shot from a 32nd-minute corner kick scramble was blocked near the line. On the night, Spector paced the hosts with five clearances while adding a cross block and a pass interception.

Despite snapping Boro's four-game win streak, 12th-placed Birmingham remained winless in five.

Elsewhere in Europe, Julian Green made an appearance for Hamburg's Under-23 team and found the back of the net in a friendly match. Green, who has been the subject of much speculation in recent days, scored his side's second goal in a 13-2 smashing of fifth-division side Halstenbrek-Rellingen.
