Jesse Marsch says New York Red Bulls could be in market for Designated Player, or two, this summer

Jesse Marsch applauds

Thierry Henry and Tim Cahill are gone, leaving the New York Red Bulls with Bradley Wright-Phillips as their only Designated Player heading into the 2015 season.

He may have company later this season.

New head coach Jesse Marsch hinted to media gathered at Red Bulls training facility on Friday that they could be in the market for a DP or two this summer.

“It would be with the thought that, 'What big player can we go out to get to add to this?' Whether it is a Designated Player – that would probably be the category of player we're looking for,” Marsch said. “… For sure, we're leaving room for one or two big moves if we feel we need to.”

Marsch will weigh the factors based on his ongoing roster evaluation and how the first part of the season plays out. He did, however, offer some position specifics that could narrow down the targets.

“I would say we have center backs on the radar, forwards on the radar and attacking midfielders on the radar for the DP position,” he said.

Henry, the French legend who spent the past four seasons with the Red Bulls, retired after the 2014 season, and Cahill and the team mutually parted ways. He later signed with Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

Wright-Phillips, who won the MLS Golden Boot last year with 27 goals, inked a DP deal over the offseason. The Red Bulls also brought in US international midfielder Sacha Kljestan on a non-DP deal.
