American Exports: Ankle injury puts Aron Johannsson in doubt for AZ Alkmaar's Sunday visit to Groningen

Aron Jóhannsson scores vs. Ajax

AMSTERDAM – Fresh off striking a late winner at Ajax on Thursday night, AZ Alkmaar top gun Aron Jóhannsson is facing a late fitness check for their Eredivisie trip to face Groningen on Sunday.

Scant moments after stabbing home the only goal of the match to earn AZ's first league win in Amsterdam since 1980, the US forward turned his right ankle while being tackled. Jóhannsson limped off five minutes from time and could now miss out over the weekend.

"Aron's got a 'big egg' on his ankle, as they say in the Netherlands," AZ press officer Daan Schippers told MLSsoccer.com. "He is doubtful for Sunday's match, but we'll try to prepare him."

Thanks to his goal at Ajax, Jóhannsson has now scored in consecutive league games for the first time in just over a year. After starting the season late due to a pair of offseason surgeries, including one on his right ankle, he has bagged four goals in 11 Eredivisie matches this term.
