American Exports: Herculez Gomez strikes again in Puebla's latest Copa MX victory

Herculez Gomez in action for Puebla

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Herculez Gomez continued to make his case for more Liga MX minutes on Tuesday by scoring his second goal in three Copa MX starts since returning to Puebla in the offseason.

The 32-year-old opened the scoring in La Franja’s 2-1 Group 5 home victory over Merida. The World Cup 2010 veteran made a late run into the box and headed home from a free kick fired in from the right by former Chicago Fire Designated Player Cuauhtémoc Blanco in the 34th minute.

Gomez has now completed all three of Puebla’s Copa MX matches, but he has only been on the field for 60 total minutes in league play. For Merida, Emanuel Guzman completed the full 90 minutes.

Puebla top Group 5 on eight points, with Merida in second on seven.

In the same group, forward Sonny Guadarrama was taken off at halftime in Atlante’s 3-1 away loss to Toluca. The result leaves Guadarrama’s team in last place with just one point to show from their three games.
