Report: Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua make big offer to New York Red Bulls striker Tim Cahill

The Tim Cahill watch continues.

The New York Red Bulls Designated Player's return to MLS has been in question since the club's playoff exit in the Eastern Conference Championship in November, and it remains so, with the Sydney Morning Herald citing Chinese sources in reporting that the Australian striker is set to leave MLS for Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua.

The 35-year-old Cahill, who helped Australia to their first Asian Cup title last weekend, has reportedly been offered a one-year, $3 million deal by Shanghai. The Designated Player still has one year remaining on his Red Bulls contract and would need to either negotiate a release from the club or have a transfer fee paid for him if he is to leave. He has also been linked with Al Wahda in the United Arab Emirates.

Cahill has produced 14 goals and 10 assists in 62 regular-season games since joining the Red Bulls from English Premier League club Everton in July 2012. He recorded 11 goals and five assists to earn an MLS Best XI selection and helped the Red Bulls to the Supporters' Shield in 2013. In 2014, he saw his playing time wane down the stretch and only notched two goals and two assists in 22 regular-season games, coming off the bench down the stretch.

Shanghai Shenhua have had big-time internationals on their roster before, with Chelsea forward Didier Drogba and former French international Nicolas Anelka teaming up at the club in 2012.
