AFCON: Montreal Impact defender Ambroise Oyongo, Cameroon eliminated after loss to Ivory Coast

Ambroise Oyongo, Cameroon

Ambroise Oyongo was merely an onlooker as Cameroon were eliminated Wednesday from the Africa Cup of Nations following a 1-0 loss to Ivory Coast in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

A first-half goal from Max Gradel was the deciding moment as Cameroon finished last in Group D with two draws and a loss while Ivory Coast wrapped up the group’s top spot.

Oyongo, who will return to MLS with a new team after he was traded this week from the New York Red Bulls to the Montreal Impact, started at right back in Cameroon’s first two games of the tournament and scored the equalizer in their 1-1 draw with Mali on Jan. 20, his first international goal.

He also started for the Indomintable Lions in their 1-1 draw Tuesday against Guinea
