Legendary Real Madrid and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas expresses desire to play in the United States

Iker Casillas - with Real Madrid

Could Iker Casillas be the next big name European to make his way to MLS?

The longtime Spanish national team and Real Madrid goalkeeper certainly seems interested, telling The Wall Street Journal in an interview published on Monday that he has “no problem saying that he would like to play in the U.S.”

Casillas, 33, is under contract with Real Madrid until the end of the 2016-17 European season. One of the most decorated goalkeepers of all time, the Madrid and Spain captain has won three UEFA Champions League titles and five La Liga crowns with Los Blancos and took home the 2010 World Cup and 2008 and 2010 European Championships with Spain.

He’s had a bit of trouble in recent years however, struggling through a disastrous World Cup last summer and occasionally finding himself on the bench with Madrid. Though he’s re-cemented himself as the top goalkeeper on the club level this season, he is speaking openly about the possibility of following fellow Spaniard New York City FC Designated Player David Villa to MLS.

“I would be unable to leave Real Madrid and be a part of a competing team, but I could leave to have an adventure,” Casillas said. “I would like to experience a different soccer and put in perspective all the time I’ve been at Real Madrid.”
