Report: Philadelphia Union defender Carlos Valdes close to deal with Uruguayan club

Carlos Valdes, Colombia, World Cup

Could Carlos Valdes’ return to the Philadelphia Union be short-lived?

Uruaguayan outlet El Pais reported Tuesday that Valdes is negotiating with Nacional de Montevideo, with the two sides apparently close to an agreement. An official with the Uruguayan side told the newspaper, as reported Thursday on FutbolMLS.com, that “negotiations are on track, hopefully in the next few hours they can close and we can count on him.”

A Colombian international defender, Valdes came to the Union in 2011 and was sent on loan to Colombian club Independiente Santa Fe in 2013, followed by a stint at Argentina's San Lorenzo. He returned to Philly late last season after the 2014 World Cup, and started eight games on the Union’s backline.

"There's always interest in players of Carlos' caliber, especially considering he represented his country as a veteran of last summer's FIFA World Cup,” a Union official told MLSsoccer.com.

If the reports are correct, it marks the second time Nacional have eyed Valdes: The club pursued him at the close of his time with San Lorenzo. A source close to Valdes told FutbolMLS.com that there was no truth to the latest rumors, however.

News that the Chilean club Colo Colo was also interested in Valdes’ services surfaced this week as well.
