Report: New York Red Bulls in discussions with French defender Ronald Zubar

Reported New York Red Bulls target in action for Wolves

The New York Red Bulls could be turning to France to shore up their defense.

A report from French sports daily L'Equipe indicated that the Red Bulls are in "advanced talks" with the 29-year-old, who is a natural right back that can also play center back. The report was later confirmed by Empire of Soccer, though the publication noted via its sources that Zubar was "an option" being vetted by the team rather than the subject of advanced discussions.

Zubar came up through the youth ranks and started his professional career at Caen before transferring to Ligue 1 powerhouse Marseille, where he played from 2006-2009. He then spent three-and-a-half in England (with Wolverhampton Wanderers before moving back to France with AC Ajaccio, where he currently plays. However, injuries sidelined him for much of the second half of the 2013-14 season and he has featured in eight of Ajaccio's 20 Ligue 2 games this season.

Internationally, Zubar represented France at the youth levels and has also represented the French territory of Guadeloupe, where he was born and whose team competes in CONCACAF.

The Red Bulls, led by recently-appointed sporting director Ali Curtis and head coach Jesse Marsch, looked to midfield and attack in the first two rounds of last week's SuperDraft, but remain on the hunt for defensive help, especially in Zubar's two preferred positions.
