Ahead of the 2015 SuperDraft, MLSsoccer.com is breaking down each team's needs and potential draft targets. Double-winners Seattle Sounders are -- yup -- already pretty stocked.
If you've just won a double -- not the double -- of any sort, you're probably pretty well set, roster-wise. That holds true even if you've sold your star right back to a Premiership team, and if one of your starting central defenders is still pondering whether or not he wants to subject his 34-year-old body to one more year of pro soccer.
Part of how Seattle got so stacked, of course, was by trading away draft picks for MLS-ready talent. Their first round pick, for example, went to Toronto FC in exchange for Stefan Frei. That's a good trade, and Sigi Schmid's gang have the hardware to prove it.
Given all that, and given the fact that Schmid hasn't really emphasized building through the draft in Seattle in the way he used to with Columbus and LA, don't expect any game-changers to come into CenturyLink on Thursday.
Seattle SuperDraft selections: #27 & 40 (2nd round), #75 & 80 (4th round)
Seattle Depth Chart: 25 players
Goalkeeper (2): Stefan Frei, Troy Perkins
Left Back (2): Leo Gonzalez, Dylan Remick
Center Back (4): Chad Marshall, Zach Scott, Damion Lowe, Jimmy Ockford
Right Back (1): Tyrone Mears
Defensive Midfield (3): Osvaldo Alonso, Micheal Azira, Aaron Long
Center Midfield (3): Gonzalo Pineda, Andy Rose
Left Midfield (2): Marco Pappa, Aaron Kovar, Darwin Jones
Right Midfield (2): Brad Evans, Lamar Neagle
Forward (5): Obafemi Martins, Clint Dempsey, Chad Barrett, Kenny Cooper, Kevin Parsemain, Victor Mansaray
Primary Need: Right back
Their fullback depth is actually greater than it appears on paper since we know Evans can play that spot at a very high level, and I have a suspicion that Long is being groomed for a position switch. Still... if you can get a guy who might stick at a position that always needs filling, you pull the trigger. Mears is on the wrong side of 30, after all, and Schmid prefers to have Evans as a midfield jack-of-all-trades.
There will be right back talent on the board at 27, and probably at 40 as well.
Targets: Boyd Okwuonu (North Carolina), Luke Michu (Notre Dame), Wes Charpie (South Florida)
Secondary Need: Goalkeeper
I had this as the team's primary need on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, they went out and got Perkins, who should provide quality US Open Cup and occasional regular season rest for Frei.
That still leaves Seattle with just two 'keepers on the roster. This is a strong draft for backstops, so let's mark them down for spending that No. 40 pick on one, shall we?
Targets: Tyler Miller (Northwestern), Andrew Wolverton (Penn State), Spencer Richey (Washington), Earl Edwards (UCLA)
